April 23, 2013 "Ihe Watchdog 9 EDGE indie gamer's And Yet It Moves Chris Toomey Photo Editor Sometimes we all need a moment of Zen. We need to just take a deep breath, relax and do noth- ing. However, that's kind of hard to do when you have a thousand things to do and twice that many games in your Someday-I-Will-Play- These-GamesrReally-I- Will-Get-To-Them-Soon-I- Promise list. Luckily for you, me and everyone else whose life is spiraling out of con- trol, there's a game that will let you experience a little bit of Zen while you check a great game offofyour To- Play list. And Yet It Moves is a game that came out in 2009 from Vienna-based indie developer Broken Rules. In it, you puzzle and plat- form your way through a 2-D world that looks like it is made out of tom up pictures from a magazine. Your objective in the game, you control a paper cutout character (who has what I believe are dreadlocks, or maybe he just has a sea anemone on his head) and try to avoid the obstacles that are thrown at you as you wander through the collage-like landscape. The key mechanic in the game is the fact that you can rotate the world around you in addition to being able to move anemone-hair left and right (plus jump). This turns simple jumping from platform to platform into a real test of coordina- tion, since you often have to move your character with one hand and rotate the world with the other. It's really hypnotizing; in fact I once found myself just sitting and spinning the world for a full minute before I realized that I was actually trying to get to a ledge above me. As you progress, the environment gets increas- ingly strange, as though your character is walk- ing through some kind of dream world. You start in a rocky environment, move to a jungle and eventually reach what I think is a mar- ble maze. There is much more, but I'll let you dis- coqer it for yourself. Despite its surreal quality, the game keeps an air of calm and serenity about it, as does the name- less character you control. No matter how many times you miss a jump and ac- cidentally shred his paper body, he always reappears and calmly continues on his journey. I wish I had anem- one-hair's composure. The bizarre yet am- bient music in the game reinforces the tranquil tone of the game. It's probably not something you're go- ing to be jamming to as you lift weights or blast as you drive down the free- way with the top down, but it would be perfect for listening to during yoga or perhaps while trimming a Bonsai tree. And Yet It Moves is a beautiful moment of gaming Zen which I high- ly recommend. It doesn't make you want to rage-quit or smash your computer. It simply takes you out of your high-speed, high- stress world for a brief mo- ment and plunges you into a serene place where all you have to worry about is platforms and the rotation of the world. Plus, it's available for not only Windows but for Mac and Linux as well. You can find it on Steam, or on the website: http://www. 111 sQ doku iiiNi00i 9 4 7"! i!iliiiiiili!iiiiiii!ili iiiiiiliiiiii!ililiii ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ............... !i!;!i!i!i!i!i!iii!i!i!ii .............. iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iNiii iliNiiiSlii 4 i !::i:3!:3i:i::!i.'t:!:i:!:i:i:i:i:!:i:i iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! :3::3333:3:33 2 7 iii iiiii100ilii!iiiiiiiiiii 3 :::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::::: ...... iiiiiiiii!iiiiil i iiii ............................. ii!i 2 ::::::::::::::::::::: :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ::::::::::::::::::::::: ======= ii:!iiii:i:ililiiiii ii:iiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!iiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiii ............. 4 Movie review: "42" Alex Clark Staff Reporter In a game divided by Color, one man changed how the sport of baseball was to be played from then on. The movie "42" is the story about a man named Jackie Robinson who broke the color barrier in baseball by being con- sidered the first successful African-American base- ball player. Now, we see many black baseball stars in the game today such as Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rol- lins, along with stars of the past such as Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente and the Homerun King Hank Aar- on. However, the movie isn't only about Jackie's baseball ability; the movie is also about all the adver- sity and abuse Jackie had to endure in order to break the color barrier. The movie is very powerful not just for the message it brings, but also to see the true story of how what Jackie needed to overcome. Branch Ricky, the manager of the Major League Brooklyn Dodgers, discusses the idea of bring- ing in an African-American baseball player to the Dodg- ers. At fit'st, he is ridiculed for the notion, but goes through with it anyway. He knew he had to pick a play- er from the Negro leagues that could stand the abuse, torture and ridicule from everybody, while being able to keep a cool head and play amazing baseball. He saw only one ball play- er that fit the bill, a young ball player named Jack Robinson. He was picked up by the organization and was sent immediately to spring training where the abuse started. Constant booing, verbal abuse and death threats were a normal day for Jackie. He worked his way through the Minor League system and made Photo: Film poster for 42. it to the Brooklyn Dodg- ers the following year. He was tested even more in the Major Leagues, in not only proving his skills, but in also keeping a handle on his temper. In the Majors, there are even more people watching who are ready to tear Jackie to bits. Jackie was tested, but makes it through earning the respect of others including his peers and teammates. This movie was spec- tacular in a few of ways to me. The first was with how historically accurate the story was. Many people believe that Jackie was just assigned to play in the ma- jors and that is the end of the story, while in actuali- ty, he played a year in the minor leagues before mak- ing the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Another aspect that was impressive was the chemistry between Branch Ricky and Jackie Robinson (portrayed re- spectively by Harrison Ford and Chadwick Boseman) Courtesy of Wikipedia was incredible. Both really seemed to have a connec- tion during the movie, even though they were only in a few scenes together. Also, Ford nails the character of Branch Ricky, a true base- ball fan who sees that there is an "un-pure" aspect to the game. The last part of the movie that really im- pressed me was the fact that the writers were not afraid to show how brutal people were both physically and verbally to Jackie. This was the type of movie that will not apologize for how in- tense the language was and what was said. While this movie may be too intense for some people to han- dle with the language and abuse shown, it was a very strong movie with a great message. A movie that well represents the first black ball player in the baseball Hall of Fame in Cooper- stown, and the player who had the only number to be retired throughout all of baseball: 42.
