Cana- dian singer, Ferron presents an imagery in her songs not often found in music. Ferron's ability as a poet is evident in the lyrical content of her newly released album FERRON: Phan- tom Center. Her last release in 1984, Shadow on a Dime earned her a four star rating from Rolling Stone. This critically acclaimed album was placed alongside Bruce Spring- steen and Prince for best album of the year. In 'Harmless Love' from her new album, Ferron wants us to "Take a new step in an old direction" that direction being "harmless love". Several of her other cuts are also worth mentioning. 'Sunken City', 'Heart of Destruction' and 'Inside Track' are very strong and have a lot to say. Ferron was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia. While singing in a folk club, she met Gayle Scott, an American fleelance photographer working on a Canadian film production. Together, the two formed a record label--Lucy Records/Penknife Productions LTD. Ferron's first album under this label, "Testimony" made the top ten list of several critics. She started touring in the United States as well as Canada, winning the hearts of her audience with her per- sonal, revealing songs. After extensive touring following her Shadow on a Dime release, she started suf- feting from writers block, better known as 'bum out'. She was advised by Scott to take a hiatus. Upon her return to the world of music from her break, she and Scott joined forces with Chameleon Records Along with Joe Chiccarelli, the producer of Phantom Center, they produced the new album, FERRON: Phantom Center. Along the path that Ferron has taken, she said she has learned about herself, others, music, and freedom. A lot of the turbulence that clouded her past at times has been resolved in her new album. She feels the album has moved her towards an acceptance of the values that lie at the heart of the human condition. Ferron's music is reflective with a light pop sound. She won't.blow you away with her range or dynamics, but she displays an emotion that is refreshing. You would almost mistake her for Amy Grant, but her vocal range is lower.
